Levaquin (levofloxacin) can be sometimes prescribed for the prevention of anthrax, but is most often used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Your doctor may decide to prescribe this medicine for some other conditions you have or combine it with other medicines. Depending on the type of infection you have you may be required to take Levaquin for a certain period of time. Swelling of the tendon (fibrous tissue that connects muscle to bone) is a rare side effect that can be experienced most often by people older than 60. The symptoms include swelling, pain, stiffness or trouble moving your limbs. In that case you need a lot of rest and to consult your health care provider. You need to immediately stop taking this medicine and contact your health care provider if you display the following symptoms of tendon tearing: hearing a pop in the area of the tendon, and bruising after some injury received as a result of physical activity.
Taking this medicine is some rare cases may lead to the tendon rupture in your hands, shoulders, ankle or other parts of your body. This side effect can happen in people of any age but is most often experienced by those older than 60. The following drugs must not be used in combination with Levaquin unless your doctor recommends doing so: diuretics, anticoagulants (warfarin), irregular heartbeat medicine, insulin, theophylline, diabetes drugs, antidepressants, cyclosporine, NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and naproxen. There are some serious side effects that need to be reported immediately to your health care provider or local emergency room: itching, hives, trouble swallowing and breathing, severe diarrhea, chest pain, fever, fainting, pounding heartbeat, restlessness, anxiety and some other symptoms that interfere with your everyday activities.
